2021 Summer Internship: Amy Dang at Geico

My name is Amy Dang, and I am majoring in Marketing/Information Systems and I’m expecting to graduate in Spring 2022. This summer I had the opportunity to work in Georgia as a Marketing intern for Geico’s Business Leadership Development program.

GEICO is an auto insurance company that’s known for being the second largest auto insurer in the U.S. After many years, they’ve been able to make a name for themselves by providing excellent customer service and memorable commercials on different media platforms. You may have come across some during the football season! No one can forget the little gecko on screen.

As an Marketing intern, I was responsible for tackling the reputable problems encountered throughout the sales/service and claims department while also furthering my understanding of the insurance industry. With that, me and my team were given three projects where I was in charge of making action plans and recommendations/solutions to ensure brand consistency and to execute creative ideas for the executive board and managers of my region.

During my time at GEICO, I personally learned to be more self aware. After every presentation, me and my team would discuss some strengths and weaknesses we had for each other. Though some of the comments were hard to hear, it allowed me to be more open to criticism and to take everything with a grain of salt. Professionally, I learned to be more confident about my public speaking skills. Coming into the internship, I knew it was something I wanted to work on so having to do three presentations IN FRONT OF PEOPLE HIGH on the corporate ladder definitely gave me the confidence to articulate my thoughts to others better.

My recommendation for this upcoming recruiting season is to not be so hard on yourself!! Take it from me, I personally cried a lot…. And when I say a lot I MEAN ALOT...like crying myself to sleep a lot. Everything will work out in the end. Just trust the process. If you’re interested in a position similar to my job, NETWORK as much as possible. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to others because all of us have been in this position before. I’m also here to take any coffee chats if anyone you would like to set up an appointment with me.
